Designing augmented interface for designers and makers

Course Description
Instinctual Machine Creating instinctual design and making experiences in Mixed Reality world Microsoft has launched their second generation of AR device Hololens 2 with the iconic keyword of “instinctual interaction” to describe its improved user experience. New features provide noticeably improved tangible and intuitive experiences for users thanks to their hand and eye-tracking system. But what does this mean to us architects, designers, and builders? Will this development change the way we design and shape our physical environments? In this seminar, we will be focusing on this question, by learning and applying the well-packaged toolsets developed by Microsoft Hololens2 -MRTK-, we will question how we as architects and designers to capitalize this technology and weaponize it in the way we design and make our physical reality.

Course Abstract
Microsoft has launched their second generation of AR device Hololens 2 with the iconic keyword of “instinctual interaction” to describe its improved user experience. The Augmented user experience compare to its earlier generation device – Hololens1 -, it provides a noticeably better tangible and intuitive experience for users thanks to their hand and eye-tracking system. But what does this mean to us architects, designers, and builders? Projects such as Steampunk Pavilion* are a great reference for using a holographic template to build something we could never build otherwise. These projects were produced with Hololens 1 without fully developed instinctual interaction. How will the developed functionalities affect the way we shape our future environment? Will this development change the way we design and shape our physical environments?

In this seminar, we will be focusing on this question, by learning and applying the well-packaged toolsets developed by Microsoft Hololens2 -MRTK-, we will question how we as architects and designers to capitalize this technology and weaponize it in the way we design and make our physical reality.  We will start by learning the new features of Hololens2, understanding its full capacity and limitations, and try to expand the AR experiences to design highly customized workflows and toolsets for specific projects/procedures. We will be developing all tools using the Unity3D.

We will expand our AR experiences that are customized for architects, designers, and builders by learning and exploring different package libraries of Unity (includes machine learning, geoinformation mapper, AI-based speech recognition, etc.) as well as additional hardware devices such as robot arm, motion capture cameras and so on.
