Adaptive Deconstruction

Currently the discipline of architecture is in the process of being actively redefined by shifting political, social, technological, and ecological paradigms. In the 2GAX studio students explore the forefront of the discipline, leading the conversation about the next in terms of aesthetic agendas, architecture’s contemporary and future societal role, and the impact of theoretical and technological innovation on architecture’s design and communicative repertoire. The Compositional Morphologies studio places an emphasis on advancing formal strategies beyond the current state-of-the-art. Students integrate extra-disciplinary techniques and technologies into the design workflow in order to develop innovative architectures that respond to changing societal, ecological and technological contexts.

COURSE ABSTRACT:

Students’ design work engages issues that range from fundamental morphological transformations through rigorous 3D modeling, to the role of the image and digital sampling in the production of architectural form.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The studio Adaptive Deconstruction questions the contemporary architectural status of the building material. The stability and immutability of Vitruvian firmitas, or the structural integrity of a building, has effervesced into numerous bits of materials that congeal in myriad forms to comprise, describe, and construct various aspects of our environment. We are challenged to re-imagine and to consider what is an architecture of reuse, to invent new stories that demand new forms, aesthetics, and ways of being in the world. The 2GAX studio will work through digital tools, material studies, and digitally produced models; we will begin from an abandoned industrial building that will be ‘deconstructed’ and renewed. The intention is to work through scalar changes from the single construction material, the building mass, to the urban space of LA. To navigate the project in all scales, one understands that material, interiority, and exteriority are intermingled into a single narrative. At the same time, the studio will examine how the documentation process of sites, objects, and spaces becomes deliberately misconstrued to engender multiple authenticities. We will perform acts of architectural duplicity that allow us to cut through the assumed reality and discover the possibilities of an architecture of a second life, a kind of architectural recycling. Our focus is on the aesthetic dimension of architecture and the possible production of new modes of being in the world. We take Los Angeles as our inquiry, action, and architectural speculation site.
