AA Visiting School is inviting you to our winter workshop ‘Social Algorithms’, which will be focusing on application of social data and agent-based design within the cross-disciplinary research in the field of urbanism and computational architecture.
After two years of successful experimental design research at Yonsei University, we are happy to announce the official collaboration between Yonsei University and the Arcitectural Association School of Architecture in form of AA Seoul Visiting School. We are inviting architects as well as students and professional from other related design disciplines to join this multi-disciplinary research project, and engage into the discussion about computational design methodologies, the influence of social aspect in urban formation, social interactions in megacities and other aspects of urban agency, using Seoul as testing ground.
Social algorithms and community driven urbanism
Though one of the largest cities in the world, Seoul is at the same time modern and historical. This comes as a product of overlap between the tradition and rapid urban development in the 2nd half of 20th century. This interesting mixture and contrast is what gives this city its unique characteristics. As consequence, although technologically developed and highly urbanised, Seoul’s urban fabric and life-style heavily rely on human scale – call it the software of the urban – as its main shaping force. It is very interesting to examine how the software – human, community & social aspects of everyday life, rather than hardware of the city – built environment itself, drives the evolution of Seoul to such high degree.
This year, we will be investigating the mentioned software component of the city, looking at the lowest level elements in urban fabrication – the people. We will be looking at the formation of urbanism and architecture on the level of local communities, mapping the social data and behavioural patterns of users, with goal of establishing a feedback-loop between social parameters and design outcomes.. We will approach this topic from aspect of social interaction and implication they have on the built environment and vice versa, as well as from a computational/algorithmic aspect of producing a toolset for generation and simulation of resulting designs. During the workshop, we will be using variety of digital tools (Processing, Softimage, Maya, Rhino/Grasshopper…) in order to introduce students to techniques and methodologies of algorithmic design and procedural modeling. We will focus on application of non-linear design strategies, investigating relationship between the input data and the resulting urban formations.
